The Real Estate Show
We've had the opportunity to offer quite a few big concert ticket giveaways on The Way Out in recent weeks. This past week we had not one but two pairs of tickets to pass on to our listeners to see Real Estate's upcoming Madison show at the Majestic on March 25th. And as we usually do in these situations, we crafted the entire hour around Real Estate and their mellow, hazy indie-pop sound.
Our approach was a bit looser than usual this time around, though. We played a couple proper Real Estate tracks, some music from band members' side projects (Ducktails, Alex Bleeker), and a handful of songs from their contemporaries, including touring companions and buddy bands (Woods, Pure X). But we balanced that out with a number of older artists and songs which influenced Real Estate, or at least remind us of Real Estate in one way or another and thus we imagine might've influenced them along the way.
Here's the playlist for our Thursday, March 13, 2014, broadcast:
Real Estate - "Talking Backwards"
Alex Bleeker - "These Days"
Woods - "Hand it Out"

Austin Psych Fest 2014
This week we had a big giveaway to award to one lucky listener: a pair of Sunday day passes to Austin Psych Fest 2014. We crafted the entire show around artists performing at this year's three-day festival (May 2-4), ranging from brand new tracks by the likes of Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks to classics from reunited bands such as The Zombies. The festival has a huge (and hugely impressive) lineup this year with nearly 80 different artists performing. As a bonus, we were invited by Natalie and Zack to fill in for Dimension 7 (which usually precedes The Way Out on Thursdays at 9:00pm), making ours a special 2-hour long super-sized broadcast.
Here's the playlist for our Thursday, March 6, 2014, broadcast:
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - "That Girl Suicide"
Pink Mountaintops - "Ambulance City"
Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks - "Little Fang"

The Dan Deacon Show
This past week we had an opportunity to give away a pair of tickets to see Dan Deacon's upcoming show in Madison, and we ended up crafting the entire hour around Deacon and the music of his many friends and collaborators. We played songs from a few of his touring companions, fellow Baltimore denizens and some Wham City collective members, Dan Deacon Ensemble performers, and a handful of other like-minded noise-pop, avant-electro, neo-prog, and indie/punk weirdos. We didn't even have time to explore the more contemporary classical side of Deacon's career, which has seen him collaborate with artists like So Percussion and Kronos Quartet.
